Santa Clara Cricket Club

SCCC History

A "Brief" history of the Santa Clara Cricket Club, year by year, from 1987 to 2000.

Santa Clara Cricket Club has been a member of the Northern California Cricket Association (NCCA) since 1987. Started by Stan Kent and his fellow cricket enthusiasts playing on a matting wicket, the club has quickly grown into one of the largest and most active clubs in the NCCA. Within a few years of its inception, SCCC was recognized as the official cricket club of the city of Santa Clara.

Its ground, located in the City of Santa Clara, is an excellent, picturesque facility that hosts many of the NCCA premier tournaments. These include the National Inter-League Tournament, NCCA Six-a-Side Tournament, and A-League/B-League All-Star Game. SCCC has one of the largest and best practice facilities in the Bay Area, complete with an astroturf center wicket, and 2 batting nets including one astroturf and one concrete pitch.

SCCC members consistently win NCCA batting, bowling and fielding awards, and are regularly selected in NCCA teams. Its members balance their on-field contributions with service off the field; strengthening the league and promoting cricket in the Bay Area. Over the years its members have served on the NCCA Grounds Committees, Selection Committees, and Executive Committee.

SCCC celebrated its tenth year anniversary in June 1997 by hosting an 8-a-side tournament in honor of the late Austen D. Warburton who contributed significantly during its formative years. The tournament, inaugurated by Santa Clara Councilwoman Lisa Gilmore, was a grand success with most teams from the NCCA participating. In 1998, SCCC successfully co-hosted the National Inter-league Tournament and was privileged to welcome Sir Garfield Sobers to their home ground. In 1999, SCCC again stood at the forefront and co-hosted the National Inter-league tournament, which saw Chief Guest and batting maestro Sunil Gavaskar gracing our grounds.
